Kitimat Emergency Program

The Kitimat Emergency Program (KEP) performs a number of emergency preparedness and disaster relief functions for the community:

  • KEP helps co-ordinate the efforts of some key volunteer groups (see below) to provide assistance and service to community members.

Kitimat Emergency Social Services - members trained to assist people who have been displaced from their home, whether through a single family house fire or an evacuation involving many families or a whole neighbourhood.

Kitimat Search and Rescue - members trained in basic search and rescue, wilderness rope rescue, swift water rescue, and organized avalanche response.

Snowvalley Amateur Radio Club - members trained to provide vital communications links in the event that normal telephone service is disrupted.

  • KEP administers an Emergency Response and Recovery Plan for the municipality. This plan will help Kitimat officials save lives, reduce suffering, protect property, mitigate damage to the environment, and control the economic consequences of emergencies and disasters.
  • KEP is available to help Kitimat residents prepare a personal plan to minimize the effects of a disaster. An emergency or natural disaster can happen at any time and the best approach for all residents is to BE PREPARED.
