Chief for a Day

Every year during Fire Prevention Week (in mid-October), Kitimat Fire & Rescue Services holds a "Fire Chief for a Day" contest. Students from all elementary schools enter their names for the opportunity to have their name drawn for that honour. The 2009 Honorary Fire Chief was Lucas Martins, a Grade 4 student from Kildala Elementary School.

Fire Chief Martins had an action packed day which included:

  • Being picked up from school in a fire truck
  • Meeting all of the on-duty fire fighters and staff
  • Getting outfitted in fire turnout gear
  • Doing some drills with the day crew
  • Lunch meeting (sponsored by MacDonald's) with the fire crew, Fire Chief, Mayor and media
  • Signing proclamations with Mayor Joanne Monaghan and Fire Chief John Klie
