Kitimat residents and visitors receive great benefits from the variety of leisure services and opportunities that are available in our community. In addition to the range of independent outdoor pursuits which can be enjoyed in Kitimat's scenic and natural environment, many recreation services and opportunities are available through community clubs and groups, private organizations, businesses and tax-supported agencies.

The effort of 80 to 100 contract workers and volunteers enhance and support the work of 25 regular and approximately 30 part-time Recreation Department staff. Together we strive to enhance the quality of life in Kitimat by offering high-quality recreation experiences and leisure opportunities.

The Kitimat Recreation Department operates municipal facilities and is involved in several partnerships to support other non-profit community recreation facilities. Developed sport and recreation sites include:

  • Eight tennis courts
  • Twelve baseball and softball fields
  • Fourteen soccer pitches
  • One rugby field
  • Two wading pools and summer playgrounds
  • Skate, bike and board park at Nechako Centre
  • Concession at Tamitik Jubilee Sports Complex, snack facilities at Riverlodge Recreation Centre
  • Banquet, conference and dance facilities at Riverlodge Recreation Centre
  • Meeting rooms at Riverlodge, Tamitik and other venues
  • South Hirsch Creek mountain bike trails (six loops, lengths vary, access via Forest Avenue)
  • Hiking trails (brochure available at Museum, Riverlodge, Tamitik and Tourist InfoCentre)
  • Rod & Gun Club (skeet shooting and archery)
  • Snowmobile trails (Contact Snowmobile Club)
  • Hirsch Creek Park (Nature trail, picnic sites and sports field)
  • Radley Park (Campground, fishing and picnic site)
  • Hospital Beach (Picnic area and car-top boat launch south of Rio Tinto Alcan)
  • Fire Mountain Rifle Range
  • 22 Neighbourhood adventure parks
  • Snowflake Park (Equestrian facility and riding trails)
  • Hirsch Creek Golf & Winter Club: 18-hole golf course, four sheet curling rink. Year-round banquet and meeting rooms. Golf season is approximately May to October. Curling season is October to March
  • Snowflake Seniors Centre
  • MK Bay Marina, Kitamaat Village Road
  • Moon Bay Marina, south of Rio Tinto Alcan

Additional Recreation Department services include:

  • Coordinating community use of sports fields and park picnic sites
  • Disabled fishing location, Kitimat River at Methanex pumphouse
  • Riverbank fishing program
