Message from Mayor

Kitimat Mayor Phil GermuthThe District of Kitimat is proud of the variety of services offered to the community through the Leisure Services Department. The Leisure Services Department continues to develop quality programming for persons of all ages and abilities. In 2015, the Leisure Services Department programming included swim lessons, general interest programming, training workshops, and special events.

Outdoor and facility improvements continue to be a focus area of the Department. The five year upgrade program of Radley Park continued with construction of a new shower/washroom facility and a new sani dump/lift station. The Department in conjunction with Tree Canada will be purchasing new ornamental trees to place around several of the playgrounds and green spaces in the community. Other projects include female change room upgrades in the Tamitik Arena, Heron Park covered area, and a new playground structure at Riverlodge Recreation Centre.

The Department works with many agencies and groups in Kitimat to offer additional recreation opportunities for residents and visitors. Without their efforts many of the opportunities available to residents and visitors would not happen. The Kitimat Leisure Services Department continues to work with the Haisla on several partnerships including the Kitamaat Basketball Tournament which celebrated its 11th year in 2015. Additional groups the Leisure Services Department works with include:

Fire Mountain Shooting Club
Kitimat Marlin Swim Club
Kitimat Demons Hockey Club
Kitimat Community Services Society
Provincial Networking Group
Kitimat Youth Soccer Association
Festivals Kitimat/Kitimat Kinsmen Club
Kitimat Boxing Club
Kitimat Seniors Centre Association Branch 129
Northern Health

The Leisure Services Department was involved with several projects to improve recreation in the community including; a Seniors Symposium, Garden improvements, Cenotaph Restoration, Shames Mountain Ski Bus, Fire Mountain Shooting Range noise abatement (building renovation), community grant writing services, and management of the Council’s Grants/Sponsorship Program.

The Department continues to look for ways to improve access for persons with disabilities and educate the community about healthy living. The Leisure Access Program and KidSport campaign continue to be of prime emphasis for the Department to assist in allowing everyone to participate in the wide variety of recreational activities available in Kitimat. The Department is a key member of “Kick It Up Kitimat” which is developing education and promotional programming to promote long term sustainable healthy and active lifestyles for youth in Kitimat.

Kitimat Leisure Services has something for everyone.  The goal of the Department is to help create an active and healthy community.  I invite everyone to participate in the many opportunities offered by Kitimat Leisure Services and those throughout the community.  We have an excellent team and whether you visit the Leisure Services Department regularly or if you are new to the community, they will be pleased to take you on a tour of the facilities and answer any questions you may have.

We hope to see you at the facilities soon!

Mayor, Phil Germuth
