Message from Mayor

2011 was an extremely busy year for the Leisure Services Department as they assisted with many large community events including the Annual Rail Jam, Walk Run Festival, Dragon Boat Regatta, Festivals Kitimat July 1st celebrations, Craft Fairs and Bull-o-rama and Annual Memorial Hill Climb. Smaller events included the Family Halloween Celebration, the Annual First Night Event and the Health & Wellness Fair.
Kitimat Leisure Services received two recognitions from the British Columbia Lifesaving Society for the Bronze Level Programs and the National Lifesaving Programs offered and run in Kitimat. Joe Iannarelli, the past Director was recognized (posthumously) by the British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association with an award of Merit for his work in recreation in Kitimat, the Nechako North Coast and British Columbia.
Kitimat Leisure Services continued to work with the Haisla on several partnerships including the Kitamaat Basketball Tournament, Job Opportunities Program and trail restoration program. The Kitimat Hiking/Snow Mobile Club built a new hiking/winter activities cabin on Claque Mountain with assistance from the Job Opportunities program and the District of Kitimat. The Kitimat KidSport Fund, used to assist youth facing financial barriers to sport, was established with a partnership between Kitimat Community Services and the District of Kitimat. The fund has been supported by Scotia Bank, various Kitimat businesses and several grant opportunities.
Other "Healthy Living" partnerships offered by the Leisure Service Department include the Industrial Fitness Program, Northern Health - Kitimat Health Unit, Legacies Now, Kick It Up Kitimat, Kitimat Seniors Centre, Kitimat Youth Centre, School District # 82 and Trees Canada/BC Hydro. These partnerships have assisted in the offering of quality programming, the purchase of equipment, grant funds and lasting legacies to Kitimat.
Kitimat Leisure Services has something for everyone. There are fabulous opportunities for the whole family or individuals. Participating in recreation helps create a healthy mind and body. I invite you to participate in the many opportunities offered by Kitimat Leisure Services in the recreation facilities and throughout the community. We have an excellent staff and whether you access the Leisure Services Department regularly or you are new to the community, the staff will be pleased to take you on a tour of the facilities and answer any questions about what is offered.
We hope to see you at the facilities soon!
Mayor Joanne Monaghan
