LERN Programming Award 2011
Learning Resources Network (LERN) is an international association whose members actively promote lifelong learning. LERN members offer hundreds of exemplary programs annually; and share exceptional ideas for marketing, community service, brochure and web page designs. LERN members include leisure service departments, colleges, universities, businesses, charitable organizations, public schools and other learning institutions.
The Kitimat Leisure Services Department has been honored for excellence in Programming by LERN. The department was recognized for using our primary winter resource - snow - to create the Kitimat Rail Jam, an event for youth to showcase their freestyle skiing and snowboarding talent. This event is part of Kitimat's Winter Festival celebrations and requires creating a snow hill in downtown Kitimat. Now entering its fourth year, the Rail Jam sells out easily as it draws competitors from around the region.
The District of Kitimat wishes to acknowledge the partners who contributed to the success of this event:

BCRPA Award of Merit 2011 Recipient

Joe Iannarelli
Joe Iannarelli was a true recreation practitioner who recognized the connection between a strong and diverse recreation department and a healthy community. Though he is being recognized posthumously for his dedication to recreation, his work lives on in the District of Kitimat through the many projects and initiatives he introduced and supported.
The legacy Joe leaves for his community includes Kitimat's Canada Day Celebration which draws upwards of 3,000 people from all around the Northwest each year, the Dragon Boat Festival, Hill Climb, Youth Rail Jam Competition and Kitimat Open Basketball Tournament, plus the creation of a fully accessible fishing spot along the Kitimat River for people with disabilities and the implementation of a riverbank usage system that reduces environmental impact on sensitive areas.
Joe was the driving force in getting youth involved in the development of the SK8 Park and encouraging them to take responsibility for it. He was also a strong advocate of the relocation of the Senior Centre to the Riverlodge Recreation Centre which gave seniors better access to the recreation facilities and increased the daytime usage of the rec centre. For his tireless efforts to promote recreation for people of all ages and abilities, the BCRPA proudly presents Joe Iannarelli with an Award of Merit.

Accepting the award are Joe Iannarelli Senior with Joe Iannarelli's daughters, Robyn and Jocelyn, and Leslie June (left), BCRPA President
