Recreation Department Update

With the nicer weather, Kitimat is gearing up for a very busy programming and maintenance season.

On the programming front July 1st tops the list of major events with activities stretched over the month of June and into early July.  First-up, however, is the annual Bull-o-rama, an indoor professional bull-riding competition held in Tamitik Arena on June 11th.  Organizers are hoping for another sellout this year.  Next comes the day-long Canada Day celebration including a parade, food fair, performers and our fireworks show at Riverlodge.  Later that weekend the community will host the Annual Dave Saunders Memorial Hill Climb, a 1/8 mile uphill drag race on Haisla Boulevard, the main road through town.  The Recreation Department is also involved with the corporate challenge Dragon Boat Festival in Minette Bay that same weekend.  All this Canada Day action follows the 7th Annual Kitamaat Open Basketball Tournament that had twenty teams competing for over $10,000 in prize money.

Many of the recreation facilities are getting upgrades and some much-needed maintenance this summer.  Key projects include:

•    Upgraded sound system for Tamitik Arena
•    Compressor replacement in Kitimat Ice Rink
•    Roof reconstruction at Hirsch Creek Covered Area
•    Lift for persons with disabilities in the family change room at the Aquatic Centre
•    Community Room Renovation at Riverlodge Community Centre

The Recreation Department is also beginning to gear up and prepare for Rio Tinto Alcan's modernization project (KMP). We have been advised we should see upwards of 1700 construction workers in Kitimat at the peak of construction.  Although we are not sure what this influx of people will mean for our community, the Recreation Department is hopeful this will translate into more use of our facilities and programs.
