Clarification Regarding Recycling of Metal

Please be advised Kitimat Understanding the Environment (KUTE) is no longer accepting metal (including tin cans) at its recycling depot in Service Centre. However, residents are able to recycle metal at the District of Kitimat municipal landfill.

This change became necessary due to limited space KUTE is experiencing as a result of the volume of ICI (institutional/commercial/industrial) cardboard and paper being diverted from the landfill. Such material is prohibited from the landfill as per Part 7, Division 2 of the Kitimat Municipal Code.

Multi Material BC
, a not-for-profit organization established to meet Extended Producer Responsibility requirements introduced under British Columbia's Recycling Regulation, will address recycling of consumer product packaging and printed paper, including tin cans, PETE plastics 1-6, computer paper, magazines and phone books in early 2014.
