Provincial Grant Funding for Kitimat

The Government of British Columbia, through the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, provides funding to assist small communities (populations under 19,000) in providing basic services. Grant amounts are based on a formula that factors in a base amount, population and assessment values.

In 2012, the District of Kitimat received a Small Community Grant of $606,775. These funds were spent on the following:

  • Bear Aware Project ($10,000) to ensure the ongoing education and safety of residents.
  • Parks maintenance and improvements ($148,500) to ensure the maintenance and upkeep of Kitimat’s green spaces.  
  • Maintenance on District roads ($448,275) to ensure accessibility throughout the community.

In 2013, the District of Kitimat will be receiving $283,593 to assist with similar initiatives:

  • Bear Aware Project ($10,000)
  • Parks maintenance and improvements ($118,000)
  • Maintenance on District roads ($155,593)
     

The Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development also shares Traffic Fine Revenue with B.C. municipalities to defray costs associated with law enforcement.

In 2012, the District of Kitimat received $112,046 to assist with the cost of RCMP services and $34,305 for the renovation of cells to upgrade the housing of prisoners. An additional $71,811 will be provided to the District for the renovation of cells in 2013.
