Forest Fire Contained

Media Release – Update

9:00 am  July 18, 2014

At 09:00 hours the current situation in regards to the forest fire located 2 km south of Kitimat near the Kitimat River is:

  • The fire remains contained and forestry crews will be conducting a dangerous tree assessment followed by extinguishment of any active hot spots
  • Kitimat Fire Department members maintained a fire watch throughout the night
  • The total size of the fire has been estimated at approximately 1 (one) hectare
  • It has been determined that the fire was caused by an unattended camp fire
  • Kitimat residents may experience the smell of smoke for the next few days due to low cloud
  • Winds have subsided and rain is expected for the next few days which will help the situation
  • As a final note, the public is reminded to ensure that all camp fires are monitored and properly extinguished.  A camp fire ban is in effect until further notice.  Please refer to the BC Wildfire website for more information.
  • This will be the final update issued by the District of Kitimat.
