Single Vehicle Collision Causes Power Outage

On Thursday, September 25 at 3:00 am, the Kitimat RCMP responded to a single vehicle collision on Alcan Highway approximately 200 meters north of the train tracks. Upon arrival at scene police discovered that a single vehicle had sheered a power pole and there were power lines on the roadway.

The driver fled the scene prior to police attendance.

The collision knocked out power to the many parts in the District of Kitimat until approximately 9:00 am. The roadway is expected to open within the hour. A detour route is open to traffic traveling to Rio Tinto Alcan.

Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the collision and are attempting to determine who the driver was. If you have any information about this or any other offence, please contact Kitimat Detachment at (250) 632-7111.

UPDATE:
On Friday, September 26, the Kitimat RCMP spoke to the owner of the vehicle who admitted to being the driver of the vehicle who fled the scene. A 20 year old male resident of Kitimat faces charges under the motor vehicle act. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the collision.
