Council and Exempt Staff Remuneration

Recent media reports claim that prior to the last civic election (November 2014) Council gave themselves a 9% wage increase and Exempt Staff received a 10% wage increase over three years.

Council remuneration, reviewed each year in October, is set by District of Kitimat policy.  For purposes of this remuneration, Council’s practice has been to use the B.C. Consumer Price Index (CPI) increase from August to August.  In order to maintain consistent data, the following website and table is used:  www.statcan.gc.ca.

If the CPI is negative, remuneration will be red circled and the negative percentage will be reduced from a future raise when the CPI is positive.  This was the case in 2014, therefore, Council received a 0% increase.

Exempt staff increases are calculated, in August each year, by averaging wage increases given to exempt staff at Rio Tinto Alcan, School District #82, Terrace and to other comparative British Columbia communities.
