Owner Builders of New Homes - Exam Required

HOME PROTECTION OFFICE (HPO)

New Examination Requirement for Owner Builders

Starting July 4, 2016, anyone in BC planning to build a new home for their personal use and applying for an HPO Owner Builder Authorization will now include an exam on home building basics.  This will help owner builders expand their knowledge and improve the quality of owner-built homes.

An owner builder is an individual authorized by the Homeowner Protection Office (HPO) to build and occupy a new home for their personal use.  Owner builders must build or directly manage the construction of their new home themselves.

The exam will be offered at test centers across BC and available upon request for remote areas.  For more information about the new requirements please visit the HPO website www.hpo.bc.ca or call 1-800-407-7757 (toll-free).
