District responds to report of sheen on Kitimat River

At noon on March 16, the District of Kitimat was alerted to reports of an oil sheen on the surface of the Kitimat River.

The District immediately set out to investigate this report, ensure that municipal facilities were operating normally and to confirm that there was no danger to the quality of the community's drinking water, which there was not.

The source of the contamination on the river was eventually determined to be the outflow of a storm drain in the Service Centre.

Mayor's statement on news of Cedar LNG's environmental certificate

Kitimat Mayor Phil Germuth offers this statement on news that the Cedar LNG Project has received its B.C. environmental assessment certificate.

“On behalf of the District of Kitimat I congratulate the Haisla Nation and its partner Pembina Pipeline on reaching this milestone moment with the Cedar LNG Project. The Nation and Pembina’s passion and engagement has proven the case for a floating liquefied natural gas facility that fits into the picture of responsible development for the environment.

Temporary pool closure on March 15

The Aquatic Centre will be closed on March 15, between 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. while a component of the facility’s air system is replaced.

As well, the parking lot behind the Aquatic Centre, adjacent to Wakashan Avenue, will be closed from March 14 to March 16 due to the set up of a crane required for this work.

Scheduled Haisla Bridge inspection, March 13

The District of Kitimat will be conducting a scheduled inspection on Haisla Bridge this morning, March 13, between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Flaggers will be present for alternating traffic.
