Easter Long Weekend Hours 2023

All District of Kitimat offices and facilities will be closed on April 7 and on April 10 to mark the Good Friday and Easter Monday statutory holidays. Riverlodge and Tamitik Sports Complex, which includes the Aquatic Centre, will be open for regular hours on April 8 and 9. Need to book ice time on the days we’re closed? Kitimat celebrates 70 years of incorporation

Kitimat BC, March 22, 2023 — The District of Kitimat is wearing its party hat as it celebrates 70 years since incorporation.

Incorporated on March 31, 1953, the District was established to provide housing and services for the employees of the then-Alcan aluminum smelter. Today, Kitimat continues to grow as a place where families can live and have access to an incredible quality of life.

District responds to report of sheen on Kitimat River

At noon on March 16, the District of Kitimat was alerted to reports of an oil sheen on the surface of the Kitimat River.

The District immediately set out to investigate this report, ensure that municipal facilities were operating normally and to confirm that there was no danger to the quality of the community's drinking water, which there was not.

The source of the contamination on the river was eventually determined to be the outflow of a storm drain in the Service Centre.
