Repair work at KIR to begin this week

We are happy to share that the work to restore the Kitimat Ice Rink begins this week.

In the next few days, restoration and repair crews will be on site to begin the work. The project is estimated to be completed by the Fall 2026.

The repairs and improvements to KIR will include:

  • New electrical systems.
  • New flooring.
  • New boards including glass and netting.
  • A new score clock
  • Updates and repairs to the roofing system.

We are excited that the project has reached this point where repairs can begin....

Looking for feedback on backyard hen pilot project

With the Backyard Hen Keeping Pilot Project nearing completion, community feedback is being collected to help evaluate the success of the project and help inform next steps.

Council heard from the community the interest in considering backyard hen raising.

Staff presented a pilot project to Council to explore the feasibility of allowing backyard hens in single and two-family residential zones within the District. The project got underway in April 2024.

The District of Kitimat is happy that there will be advocacy to ensure municipalities like Kitimat can opt-in to the province’s Speculation and Vacancy Tax. (SVT)

At the recent Local North Central Local Government Association (NCLGA) in Prince Rupert, the association’s members voted in favour on the District of Kitimat’s motion to advocate for municipalities to be able to opt-in to the tax program, which targets properties that have been vacant for two or more years.
