Statement from the Mayor on incoming aluminum tariffs

Mayor Phil Germuth has offered this statement on the subject of incoming aluminum tariffs:

Rio Tinto’s aluminum smelter is a critical piece of our local economy, and I am of course concerned with anything which may negatively impact their operations here in Kitimat.

For 70 years the smelter has provided steady and continued employment for Kitimat and for the region while contributing so much to the provincial economy. Anything that could harm their business certainly affects the community here...

  • Council adopted the Fire Training Grounds third-party use fees bylaw. This bylaw sets out the fees for use by outside organizations that wish to use the District of Kitimat’s fire training grounds on Forest Avenue. An update in 2022 to the property added many new features that made it a valuable resource to emergency responders. Notes from Council, January 27, 2025:

At this meeting, Council received their first report for 2025 budget deliberations.

Much of this meeting was reviewing the budget items as presented by District staff to begin the discussion.

No final decision has been made for 2025's budget, nor for what the tax rate increase will be for the year.

As initially presented by staff, the draft 2025 budget is estimated at a total of $52,458,649, including a tax rate increase of 4.5%. These numbers will change...

We have just launched the 2025 Kitimat Budget project page at Get Involved Kitimat.

This page provides information about the budget process, tracks key dates as they're available, and allows the public to share their priorities for the year. That information is compiled and shared with Kitimat Council at certain times through the budget process.

A reminder to get your dog licence for the new year

Dog licence purchases and renewals are due by February 15 of each year, and expire on December 31 each year.

You can purchase your dog tag at the District of Kitimat office at 270 City Centre, third floor of the mall. You can also buy them at the Kitimat Community Humane Society at 1000 Eurocan Way.

The cost of a dog licence in Kitimat is currently $15 per year if spayed or neutered, $50 a year for an intact dog, and free if it is for a guide dog.
