The Kitimat Fire and Ambulance Service responded to a fire call in the Service Centre on April 4, 2024.

The department received the initial call at approximately 10:10 a.m. for the fire at 256 3rd Street and were alerted to dangerous conditions associated with the incident. A high-pressure cylinder had been punctured, resulting in a fire of its contents.

UPDATE #2 | We're happy to share that all remaining evacuation notices in the Service Centre are lifted following the morning fire on 3rd Street and traffic barriers are removed.

UPDATE | Areas of the Service Centre can now re-open, with some sections still evacuated.

Currently, a 200 metre evacuation zone is still in effect around the fire scene which is on 3rd Street.

Barricades will be in place in the vicinity of 4th Street to Industrial Avenue, and up 3rd Street towards the KUTE recycling depot.

Water Main Flushing starts April 15, 2024

The District of Kitimat will begin its annual water main flushing on April 15 and is expected to finish by June 24.

Although your water may experience brief discolouration it will continue to be safe.

If your water becomes discoloured:

  • Run your taps until the water clears
  • Avoid using hot water while the water is discoloured.

Easter holiday affects Kitimat hours

The District of Kitimat offices and facilities will be closed on Friday, March 29 and Monday, April 1, due to the Easter long weekend. This includes the District’s Leisure Services facilities – Riverlodge and Tamitik Jubilee Sports Complex – but the facilities will be open through the weekend on March 30 and March 31. For inquiries to book private ice times even on holidays, please phone 250-632-8967.

Ammonia leak drill scheduled for March 27

Tamitik Jubilee Sports Complex staff and the Kitimat Fire Department will be performing an ammonia leak drill on March 27, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. You may see emergency personnel and equipment during this exercise. Anyone at the facility during this time is asked to follow any direction as they would during an actual emergency. Thank you very much for your patience during this important safety exercise.
