When do I need a building permit?
Whether you require a building permit or not, all structures must comply with zoning regulations for setback and height as outlined under Part 9, Division 2 of the Kitimat Municipal Code. Other helpful information in the municipal code includes:

New Construction
- Building
- Buildings with a footprint larger than 10 square metres, measured to the outside wall surface, require a Standard Building Permit.
- Building with a footprint 10 square metres or less, measured to the outside wall surface, require a Deck, Shed or Greenhouse Permit.
- Unfinished area in existing building (e.g. recreation room, bathroom)

- Retaining wall over 1.2 metre
Alteration or Renovation
- Interior structural renovation (e.g. moving a wall, opening up a room)
