Building Permits

When do I need a building permit?

Even though you may not need a permit, all structures must comply with setback and height zoning regulations. If you have questions, contact Building Inspection Services at engineering@kitimat.ca or 250-632-8900.

New Construction

  • Building
  • Accessory building over 10 square metres (e.g. greenhouse, shed)
  • Unfinished area in existing building (e.g. recreation room, bathroom)
  • Deck
  • Swimming pool
  • Plumbing
  • Chimney or fireplace
  • Carport
  • Secondary suites
  • Fence
  • Sprinkler System
  • Retaining wall over 1.2 metre

Alteration or Renovation

  • Interior structural renovation (e.g. moving a wall, opening up a room)
  • Remodeling a deck
  • Plumbing
  • Carport or garage
  • Secondary suites

Demolition

  • Building
  • Accessory building over 10 m2 (e.g. greenhouse, shed)
  • Fuel storage tank
  • Accessory structure attached to building

Relocation

  • Fuel storage
  • Building
  • Accessory building over 10 m2 (e.g. greenhouse, shed)

Residential Permits

  3. Complete a Standard Building Permit Application and submit to:
