Population

Kitimat's population was reported to be 8,131 in 2016, down slightly from 8,335 reported in 2011 (Statistics Canada).

Statistics Canada completes a census every five years. The next census will be done in 2021. BC Stats releases annual population estimates for incorporated municipalities and regional districts.

For a complete listing of Kitimat population counts and estimates dating back to 1953, see our population table.

District of Kitimat calculates population projection based on economic trend.  Population projection considers expected employment numbers for confirmed major projects as a "low" projection.  Higher projections are based on anticipated employment for projects proposed, but have not received a final investment decision.  All projections assume that for every permenant export industry job (Rio Tinto, LNG Canada, etc.) there is a second job created in the community (retail, food service, health care, etc.).  Figures shown are estimates and may not reflect actual population.

Kitimat Townsite Report

The 1952 Kitimat Townsite Report by Clarence S. Stein is a nine-book set of plans and policies that describe how to build and operate a “civically independent new town”. The report covers everything from administration to zoning and includes maps of the recommended townsite design. Most of the neighbourhoods, greenbelt areas, commercial and industrial centres in Kitimat today were laid out in the original plan.

Detailed plans for future development of Kitimat make this report an invaluable document for those interested in Kitimat's past, present and future. A complete set of the 1952 Master Plan is available for viewing at Kitimat Museum and Archives.  The executive summary is available here.
