Snow Clearing

Snow clearing in Kitimat

The District of Kitimat receives a significant snowfall each year. We're also well equipped to handle it, but we appreciate everyone's cooperation.

Here are some of our bylaws and practical ways you can have a worry-free winter.

What the bylaw says
From November 1 to March 31, RVs, boats, and trailers can be parked on your property, but must be 4.5 metres from your front property line, or on your legal driveway, and, ensure there is at least 1.8 metres of unobstructed space between properties.
What you should do
Do you know where your property line is? We don't fault you if you don't, but when it comes to keeping your personal property safe we recommend simply not keeping anything on your front yard. It makes life easier for our operators and keeps your stuff lasting longer. Our 2022 Annual Report states that we have 210cm of snow over the 2021-2022 snow season and we initiated snow clearing operations 35 times.

What the bylaw says
No parking on streets between 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. from October 1 to March 31, or whenever parking impedes snow clearing
What you should do
Just don't park on the road whenever practical. This bylaw is in place to allow our operators to easily keep our streets clear of snow during snowfalls. Anything parked on the road gets in the way of that. And we presume you'd rather enjoy your time indoors instead of rushing outside when you hear the equipment coming.

What the bylaw says
When driving within the municipality you must have chains, winter tires, or tires equipped with studs between November 1 and March 31 of each year.
What you should do
Get your winter tires on, but note that our requirements and the provincial requirements are slightly different. For travelling on provincial highways winter tires are required earlier, on October 1 of each year. The provincial Highway 37S begins immediately after the junction of Kitamaat Village Road and Haisla Boulevard. That means if you're travelling to Cable Car you must follow provincial requirements.

What the bylaw saysCover of our snow removal pamphlet
Do not place snow from your driveway onto the street, other people's private property or onto public property, including ditches.
What you should do
Do not place snow from your driveway onto the street, other people's private property or onto public property, including ditches. The reason is doing so could create dams that impedes proper water drainage. This can cause localized flooding and roadway damage.
