Kitimat is a pet-friendly community with plenty of spaces to walk your dogs and with dog waste bags available at locations throughout the community. (And we really mean throughout the community!)
Here is a quick summary of things to know about owning a pet in Kitimat:
- When outdoors, dogs need to be on a leash unless you are at a designated off-leash area. Click here to learn more where those are.
- You must clean up after your dog.
- Your dog needs to be licenced once they are four months old.
- Visit the Kitimat Municipal Office at 270 City Centre to purchase a dog licence.

Animal bylaws
All bylaws relating to animal control are under Part 5, Division 5 of the Kitimat Municipal Code.
Enforcement of animal bylaws in the District of Kitimat is handled by the Kitimat Community Humane Society. This includes:
- Excessive barking.
- Animals on the loose.
- Animal neglect.
- Animal impoundment.

Animal adoption services
The Kitimat Community Humane Society also offers animal adoption services for the community.
The animal adoption shelter hours of operation are:
- Monday to Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
