The District of Kitimat will be conducting its 8th annual Business Walk, a yearly outreach effort to speak directly with local businesses to understand the pulse of the business community.

The walk has been held regularly since 2015 and provides valuable insight to where the District can work with partners to focus its economic development efforts. This year’s walk will take place on November 15, 2022, with the support of the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce.

“What Council learns through these walks helps us know we’re on the right track as we support the local business community as best as we can,” says Mayor Phil Germuth. “We know Kitimat entrepreneurs love being here and love the people they serve, but we also know thanks to these walks that they value support in other areas, such as with revitalization.”

Programs the District of Kitimat offers includes the Business Façade Improvement Program, and the District also recently implemented a commercial centre revitalization tax bylaw which can lower municipal property taxes if certain renovation work takes place on a property.

The District also manages the Love Kitimat shop-local initiative which provides resources and support to locally owned businesses. That program is supported with resources from Northern Development Initiative Trust.

The 2021 Business Walk showed that location and clientele were the two more positive aspects about doing business in the community, while revitalization and marketing support topped out as the two primary focuses of resources that can support local businesses, according to the business community.
