The District of Kitimat’s ninth annual business walk is happening October 16.
The Business Walk, held annually since 2015, is a joint collaboration with the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce to understand the business climate in Kitimat.
Using the insight gained through these events, the District and Kitimat Chamber of Commerce have been able to tailor economic development programming and advocacy to support the areas of highest interest for local businesses.
“The information gathered from the Business Walk is invaluable and guides us towards creating a business-friendly community,” says Mayor Phil Germuth. “There are so many unique challenges to running a business and using local data we can provide real support.”
Over the past year, economic development projects have included the Kitimat Business Bootcamp, a series of informational workshops aimed at local businesses to support topics such as recruitment, housing availability for workers, and marketing. The events were hosted with the Kitimat Chamber, and concluded with a Business Builders Competition.
The District also has implemented a Commercial Centre Revitalization Tax Exemption bylaw which can lower municipal property taxes if certain renovation work takes place on a property.
“The Chamber of Commerce hosts numerous community events throughout the year to connect businesses, families and stakeholders in a lot of different, fun ways,” says Kitimat Chamber of Commerce President Ashley Hinton. “What is great about the annual Business Walk is that we are coming to the business owners directly to ask how we can do better and see what we’re doing right. The face-to-face time is something we really look forward to.”
The 2022 Business Walk showed that businesses in Kitimat were largely growing or holding steady, and that business clientele and location were chosen as what people liked most about doing business in this area. Meanwhile, staffing is the leading challenge to local businesses, followed by the cost of doing business.
Information gathered this year will continue to support the needs of local business.Annual Business Walk supports local business success
