May 1, 2020 - The District of Kitimat is continuing to work to keep our community safe through the COVID pandemic. Here are a few updates:
New Taskforces
To ensure our community endures and emerges from the COVID-19 crisis as strong as possible, we have launched two taskforces to supplement the work of Kitimat’s Emergency Operations Centre:
- Kitimat’s Vulnerable Peoples Taskforce is working with community support agencies to address the needs of our most vulnerable community members.
- Kitimat’s Economic Recovery Taskforce is working with the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce and local business community to assist businesses through these challenging times and to ensure our local economy emerges strong and vibrant.
Facilities Update
Presently, most District of Kitimat facilities remain closed, however appointments can be made to meet with staff as long as appropriate precautions are taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We recently opened the off-leash dog park on Kuldo Boulevard and the tennis courts at Riverlodge. Moving forward we will open other District facilities when safe to do so. Please continue to use physical distancing and be respectful of others anytime you are in public.
Recycling
The District has been providing support to Kitimat Understanding the Environment as they re-establish limited recycling services.
The KUTE facility is only providing limited services at this time
There are strict safety protocols in place at the facility. Please adhere to all rules for the safety of employees, yourself, and the community.
National Day of Mourning
On April 28th the District of Kitimat, Unifor Local 2300, and IAFF Local 1304 recognized and honoured the National Day of Mourning. It is a time for workers, families, employers and others to remember those who have lost their lives to work related incidents or occupational disease. During this time our thoughts are also with all workers who have been, and are being, affected by COVID-19.
B.C. Economy Slated to Begin Phased Re-Opening
The Government of B.C. has announced that they will provide more details on the re-opening of our provincial economy next week. The District will closely monitor any announcements and work to prepare our community for the next phase. As we talk about returning to a more normal day-to-day life, we need to recognize it is up to all of us to continue adhering to recommendations to keep our community safe and ensure that we can move towards a more normalized society.
