The District of Kitimat’s Fire & Ambulance Service is asking the public to be aware of active campfire bans after responding to a number of calls over the past week addressing people’s campfires.
“We are finding there have been a few occasions where we need to respond to inform people about current fire restrictions and to extinguish a campfire,” says Kitimat Fire Chief Trent Bossence. “Largely it has been out in public areas, including our Hirsch Creek Park.”
Bossence understands that a brief rescinding of the campfire ban in July – led by a lifting of restrictions throughout the Northwest Fire Centre - may have confused some who didn’t otherwise realize it was put back into effect on August 10.
Even so, notice of the most current campfire ban - as well as being shared on local news media – is visible in a number of places.
You can find the notice at www.kitimat.ca, shared through the District’s Voyent Alert notification system, on the District’s social media, and is posted at Kitimat’s two municipal campgrounds.
“Being aware of fire restrictions is a fact of life for our summers,” adds Bossence. “We just ask people take the time to confirm if a fire is allowed, because these restrictions are put in for a reason.”
