A funding agreement through the Province of B.C. and the Resource Benefits Alliance (RBA) will mean a boost to the District of Kitimat to support infrastructure projects.
The Province announced the details of its $250 million funding agreement with the 21 member communities of the RBA, with the District of Kitimat to receive $19,551,818 over the course of five years.
The RBA was formed in 2014 as a means for communities to champion funding from the Province to meet infrastructure and construction needs to support economic growth in Northwest B.C.
“Thanks to this funding agreement, our community now has the breathing room to plan for the next five years of major projects without over-burdening local taxpayers,” said Mayor Phil Germuth. “While infrastructure is not often the most exciting topic, I am happy to see it recognized today for its significance to the growth of all our Northern communities.”
According to the Province, the funding agreement “will support the renewal or replacement of capital assets and construction of infrastructure, such as roads, water, sewer and other amenities, needed to grow economic development and growth in the region.”
As funding is dispersed from the Province, District of Kitimat Council will provide direction for how funds are spent through deliberations at public meetings.
Supporting this work will be the District’s recently adopted Asset Management Policy. The policy and its associated plan will provide the District with a comprehensive look at the community’s assets that will better support their ongoing maintenance and renewal.
