We are proud to share that one of Kitimat’s longest ever serving public servants, Joanne Monaghan, has been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal, honouring her commitment to public service and local governance.

She was nominated by Kitimat Council.

Monaghan joined Kitimat’s Council in 1980 as an Alderman (title later changed to Councillor). She served in this role until 2008 when she was elected as Kitimat’s first female Mayor, and served in that role until 2014.

Her political career featured prominent roles including President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, President of the Union of B.C. Municipalities, and the then-North Central Municipal Association. She has served as Chair of the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine, and co-Chaired the UNBC Advisory Committee, among many other roles.

Her career is peppered with highlights, from relationship building work with Alcan, to initial discussions with LNG Canada which has since become the largest private sector investment in Canadian history.

Her community service was not limited to the Council table. She volunteered extensively, including with Northern Development Initiative Trust, the University of Northern BC Advisory Committee, and she led outreach workshops focusing on Women in Politics overseas and sat on many other boards and organizations.

And with all that still manage to operate multiple businesses for decades.

She has been a tireless advocate for Kitimat and worked for decades to make Kitimat the community it is today.

To received the King Charles III Coronation Medal is an honour well deserved for Joanne Monaghan.
