Kitimat celebrates 70 years of incorporation

Kitimat BC, March 22, 2023 — The District of Kitimat is wearing its party hat as it celebrates 70 years since incorporation.

Incorporated on March 31, 1953, the District was established to provide housing and services for the employees of the then-Alcan aluminum smelter. Today, Kitimat continues to grow as a place where families can live and have access to an incredible quality of life.

As the District reflects on its 70 years of incorporation, the municipality also wants to acknowledge that its history is merely a piece of the longer history of this territory, and that the municipality is within the unceded territory of the Haisla Nation.

“As we mark Kitimat’s 70 years as a municipality, we can’t forget the much longer history of the Haisla Nation on this Territory,” says Mayor Germuth. “As we plan our celebrations, we have welcomed the ongoing support from the Haisla community for how we can do so respectfully and inclusively.”

The District has partnered with the Kitimat Museum & Archives to celebrate incorporation day with a pop-up museum display in City Centre Mall from noon to 4:00 p.m on March 31. The Mayor will attend to chat with visitors at noon that day.  Families are also welcome to join a Paint the Ice activity at Tamitik Arena on April 2, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. All Public Leisure Services drop-ins are free from March 31 to April 2.

“We provide a high level of service to residents, not to mention recreation facilities that are the envy of many other communities,” continues Mayor Germuth. “I’m happy for this occasion that allows us all to reflect on our sense of community and celebrate this town and its history.”

There will be other occasions to celebrate as the year goes on, shared on the District website and Facebook page.
