Notes from Council, December 16, 2024

  • Council approved third reading of the Official Community Amendment Bylaw and the Zoning Amendment Bylaw for 3 Blueberry Avenue. These amendments are intended to change the conditions of the property, which in this case refers to the maximum number of dwelling units, a change to the allowed dwelling types, and the heights of allowed buildings. The eventual adoption of these amendments are subject to the registration of a covenant on the parcel that ensures any future lots created from this parcel adhere to the permitted number of dwellings.
  • Council received an interim Housing Needs report. This report is a new requirement under the provincial Local Government Act to provide outlooks for five and 20 year housing needs. This report provides an estimated look at the increase of housing units the community will require over the coming decades.
  • Council received the results of the Spray Park Survey and will be considered through 2025 budget deliberations. Earlier this year, Council was presented with a feasibility study with options for spray park development. Council selected their preferred option from the report and from there the District launched a community survey. The survey asked a number of design and development questions to gauge community preferences on the project. With feedback received, Council’s next step for this will be to deliberate on this through their 2025 budget discussions.
  • Updates to the Community Grants / Sponsorship Program were presented and adopted. Council had requested the program be updated through their direction in March this year. Updates include increases to grant amounts in-line with increases in inflation, and the addition of two grant categories: Special Interest Workshops/Initiatives, and Environmental Workshops/Initiatives. Eligibility of applicants is now also open to residents of Kitamaat Village. The full scope of changes can be read in the December 16 Council agenda and will soon be added to our Grants page at Grants and Funding Programs.
