A summary of items from the December 2, 2024 Regular Meeting of Council:
Council passed second reading for a zoning amendment for 3 Blueberry Avenue. This zoning amendment revises conditions such as the density of housing within the zone, the types of housing permitted, and set new maximums on floor area and building heights.
With second reading passed, a Public Hearing for this zoning amendment and associated Official Community Plan amendment bylaw will take place on December 16.
Council approved the Cemetery Amendment Bylaw, which included the introduction of two fees. One fee is for the inclusion of a photograph on a columbarium nameplate, and an additional administrative fee for orders of columbarium nameplates.
Council also approved the Cemetery Columbarium Memorial Order Policy which outlines responsibilities relating to nameplate ordering.
Following a thorough staff review, Council has directed that the District can again accept applications that relate to the storage and transportation of hazardous materials. Council had restricted applications relating to hazardous materials in October 2023, to give District staff time to review local bylaws and other legislation to ensure safe storage and transportation of hazardous materials in the community. A robust set of requirements both locally, provincially, and federally has provided assurances of safety.
Council approved four free residential landfill passes to eligible property owners for 2025. For the first time in 2024, given the introduction of fees to access to Kitimat Landfill, the District provided households four passes to use the landfill without paying the minimum fee. In 2025, the minimum fee increases to $10 per visit for up to 100 kg. The District encourages all residents to take full advantage of the curbside collection program, however the continuation of this program in 2025 recognizes that there are occasional requirements to still visit the landfill in person.
Also to note, the landfill passes issued in 2024 will continue being valid up to January 31, 2025.
