Notes from Council, February 18, 2025:

  • Council passed first and second reading of the C4 Local Store Zoning amendment. This is a bylaw amendment for 1442 Nalabila Boulevard which, once passed, will allow for an additional restaurant business to operate within the allowable 225 square metres of commercial floor space as well as increase the maximum amount of living units from one to two. With these readings passed, a public hearing is scheduled for March 17 ahead of that evening’s Council meeting.
  • Council approved a Third-Party Bench Policy, which establishes guidelines for the addition of benches in the community, specifically the private benches at public transit locations with private advertising opportunities. The policy provides details on the application process and insurance coverage requirements.
  • A report to Council was received for information, regarding solid waste disposal on commercial properties. The report followed presentations from property owners with concerns that residents were using commercial waste bins on private property. The report outlines the responsibility that property owners have with their waste bins, referring to regulations outlined in the Kitimat Municipal Code.
  • Council will be considering a resolution to submit to the North Central Local Government Association. The motion’s intent would be to implore the provincial government to allow municipalities to enforce a vacancy tax on residential properties which are vacant for two or more years. The motion for consideration will be brought forward at a future meeting.
    • The North Central Local Government Association is a collective of local governments in North Central B.C. and resolutions passed through NCLGA are then submitted to the Union of B.C. Municipalities, a province-wide association of local governments which advocate directly with the provincial government.

Next meeting is set for February 24, 2025 at 7:00 p.m.
