Notes from Council, January 20, 2025:
- Council gave the initial three readings of a fee bylaw for the use of the Kitimat Fire Department's fire training grounds. This facility, opened in 2022, has received interest from other organizations for its use. The set fees reflect the recovery of expenses, District staff-time, and other considerations including water usage.
- Council gave three readings to a bylaw which will authorize temporary borrowing for the District of Kitimat's water treatment system upgrade. A combination of this loan, District of Kitimat budget allocation, and Resource Benefits Alliance funding is supporting this project that will modernize Kitimat's water treatment system. You can learn more details about this project here: getinvolved.kitimat.ca/water-treatment-pilot-project
- Council provided District staff with direction for local community groups to engage with about projects which could be funded from the Ecological Reserve Fund. Community feedback will guide direction for how this fund can support local projects.
- Staff were directed to prepare a zoning amendment bylaw for 1442 Nalabila Boulevard. The proposed zoning will allow for up to two restaurants and one additional dwelling unit at this property. Existing zoning allows one restaurant on the property up to 225 square metres. The proposed new zoning does not change that 225 square metres requirement.
- Council received and approved the 2023 audited financial statements for the District of Kitimat. With this approval these statements will be incorporated into the District's annual report.
- Council will write a letter of support for the Kitimat Community Services Society. KCSS presented to Council regarding a recent loss of grant funding that supports settlement and language services in Kitimat.
