Notes from Council, July 7
- The District of Kitimat’s grant writer provided an update on their activities.
- Council provided the first three readings of the bylaw to amend Leisure Services fees. Fee changes will include:
- A general four per cent increase except for concerts/shows, adult admission, family admission and camping fees.
- An addition of a $3 booking fee for Radley Park and Hirsch Creek Park.
- Rental fees for a dunk tank and a snow cone machine.
- The procurement process will begin this year to replace the Kitimat Fire & Ambulance Service’s rescue-pumper truck, with a budget of $1.8 million.
- A Development Variance Permit was approved for 59 Currie Street. The variance allows for an accessory structure to be built on the front yard (existing requirement was side or rear yards), and an increase in the height of the front yard fence.
- Staff were directed to process a Development Variance Permit for 35 Davy Crescent. This variance would reduce the required building setback to allow the property owner to construct a carport over the existing driveway.
- A 2025 Official Community Plan Report Card was presented to Council and received for information. The report card provides indications for how the District has been working towards the vision and goals of the Official Community Plan, and this latest report card incorporates suggested changes noted by Council in a 2020 motion.
- Council opted not to comment on a Liquor and Cannabis Licensing Application provided to them relating to proposed changes for The Office Bar & Bistro.
- The District of Kitimat will add its voice in a letter to B.C. Premier David Eby, sharing concerns regarding rate increases for Pacific Northern Gas. Council directed for this letter following receipt of a similar letter from Terrace Mayor Sean Buitas on the subject. The issues stem from Pacific Northern Gas’ increase in gas rates which would be 20 per cent this year, and another 28 per cent in 2026.
- Council will invite the Battered Women’s Support Services to present to Council on their work, and Tamitik Status of Women will be invited to join along with them, as Kitimat’s only anti-violence organization to serve Kitimat and area for more than 50 years.
- Kitimat will provide a letter of support to accompany an application by Kitimat Understanding the Environment (KUTE) to the BC Community Gaming Grant for an application for funds to hire an Executive Director.
