The 2024 annual maintenance schedule for the Sam Lindsay Aquatic Centre is August 6 to September 22.

(Due to the BC Day statutory holiday, the last swim day is Sunday, August 4.)

Here is everything you’ve ever wanted to know about our pool’s maintenance:

What is the annual maintenance closure?

A public swimming pool requires a lot of complex machinery and plumbing to handle the thousands of patrons we welcome each year. All public swimming pools undergo a period where they need to lock the doors so they can focus on the year’s required maintenance.

This year, there will be the typical maintenance on pool systems and we are also upgrading our lighting.

Why is the closure always at this time of year?

This is our most common question. We know that despite warmer weather there are often fewer people planning to use the pool facilities during this time. We also need to schedule this work for when the qualified trades are available.

Plus, we try to ensure the work is completed with little impact to regular user groups such as the local swim club which use the facility heavily in the fall.

What can I do while the pool is closed?

Excellent question. In no particular order:

  1. Continue to use our other facilities and programs at the Tamitik Jubilee Sports Complex and Riverlodge Recreation Centre.
  2. Enjoy one of our dozens (upon dozens) of community parks and playgrounds. Visit www.kitimat.ca/parks
  3. Take a walk in nature. Visit www.kitimat.ca/trails.
  4. Until August 18, on sunny days stop by one of our two community wading pools, near Chilko Street and Heron Street. Visit www.kitimat.ca/pool for more info
  5. Check out our local library and museum.
