PRESS RELEASE:  New Yard Waste Collection Program Begins in May

APRIL 14, 2021
KITIMAT, BC – The District of Kitimat is all set to launch its new residential yard waste collection program at the beginning of May. Yard waste, which includes leaves, grass, and twigs, will be collected from Kitimat homes every other week until November. The collected yard waste will be composted at the District’s landfill.
What to Expect
Although the new program will be pretty simple to use, the District has a few rules that need to be followed to ensure the program works well:
•Yard waste will need to be set out for collection in paper yard waste bags orplastic garbage containers. Paper yard waste bags can be purchased at mostgrocery and hardware stores in Kitimat and Terrace.
•For the safety of the collection staff, containers must not be any larger than 121 L(32 gallons) and not weigh more than 23 kg (50 lbs) when full.
•Twigs can also be set out for collection as long as they are in a paper yard wastebag or plastic container. The twigs need to be less than 12 mm in diameter.
•Up to 4 paper bags or plastic containers of yard waste can be set out forcollection. If residents have a lot of yard waste, they can take it directly to thelandfill for composting.
•To support this new service, yard waste will no longer be permitted in regularhousehold garbage.
Mail Out Information
The District is sending information about the new program, including the yard waste collection schedule, to all homes that are on the District’s garbage collection service. Residents will receive this information in their mailbox the week of April 19th. Information is also available on the District’s website at www.kitimat.ca/WayLessWaste.
