District of Kitimat
Scaled Back Canada Day Celebrations

June 28, 2021 – The District of Kitimat will scale back Canada Day celebrations this year. Events have been scaled back out of respect for all those whose lives have been taken, or have been forever impacted by tragedies that are a part of our nation’s story.
Recent discoveries of hundreds of unmarked children’s graves at former residential school sites have brought to light some of Canada’s worst atrocities and crimes. This is something that we as a nation and as a society need to recognize, acknowledge, grieve, and work towards rectifying. It is with this sentiment that the District of Kitimat will scale back Canada Day celebrations this year.
This course of action is not about cancelling Canada Day or the celebration of the many wonderful cultures and peoples that make up the fabric of our nation. This course of action is about recognizing that this year’s Canada Day festivities are occurring at a time when many Canadians are struggling with tragedy and trauma that is a part of our nation’s story.
This Canada Day, we encourage people to thoughtfully reflect, and commit to action on what we can all do to continue supporting truthful reconciliation and growing a country that is accepting, welcoming, safe, and equitable for all.
