A report card on the Official Community Plan puts to print the effort the District of Kitimat has taken to achieve our core themes in this community vision document.
The report was presented to Council on July 7, providing a qualitative look at District’s actions and efforts.
In an OCP, the content provides guidance for Council to make decisions which match the residents’ interest for how the community should grow or develop over time.
The OCP’s themes are:
- Cultivate Diversified Economic Growth.
- Enhance ‘Sense of Place’.
- Maximize Livability.
- Protect Natural Environment.
- Foster Local Culture and Heritage.
- Provide Effective Services.
- Meet Responsibilities in Governance.
You can read the full report card here (page 137). In the report card, each theme notes eight specific actions that emphasize progress for those areas.
The highlights in the report covers things such as collaborations with Haisla Nation, to ongoing marketing through the Kitimat Bound brand, beautification projects, creating neighbourhood policies and conducting a Complete Community Study.
Actions to maximize livability (Theme 3) included the ongoing work to demolish Nechako Centre and the opening of the Minette Bay West Park.
Less visible but important actions include plans to update community bylaws to include floodplain policies, a joint risk assessment of tsunamis being developed with Haisla Nation, and the community Solid Waste Management Strategy and Action Plan.
