To prepare for the upcoming snow season, here is information about being safe around District of Kitimat snow clearing equipment:

  • Stay back at least three car lengths (15m) from the snow removal equipment while you are driving
  • Do not attempt to pass or go around snow clearing equipment
  • If operators are clearing behind you, pull into the nearest driveway to let them pass
  • Stay indoors while the machines are at work on your street
  • Do not place snow from your driveway onto the street or road.

  • Ensure children playing on snowbanks leave the area when snow removal equipment is near and never allow children to play in roadside snowbanks
  • Operators may not be able to see over snowbanks

  • RVs, Boats, and Trailers in residential areas:
    • Between November 1 and March 31, RVs, boats, and trailers can be parked on a residential property provided that they are:
    • 4.5 metres from your front property line; or on your legal driveway; and,
    • Ensure there is at least 1.8 metres of unobstructed spaced between properties
  • Street parking prohibited between 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. from October 1 to March 31, or when it impedes snow clearing

  • Please do not direct any comments about snow removal to the equipment operators.
  • Contact the Public Works Yard at 250-632-8930 for any comments you may have.
  • If you feel that the District of Kitimat has damaged your property during snow removal, please phone 250-632-8930 immediately to report the incident, at any time of the day, including after hours.

  • Just because you can see the operator does not mean that the operator can see you
  • There are many blind spots on the equipment
  • The machines cannot stop quickly, so keep your distance
  • Avoid walking on the road as the equipment may slide on icy stretches
  • Ensure your pets are kept inside or away from the front yard area when the snow removal equipment is near
