Kitimat makes free student fare program a permanent option for youth

Kitimat BC, August 30, 2023 — The District of Kitimat is happy to announce its Student Fare Transit Program has transitioned to a permanent part of our local transit system.

After the success of a pilot program, youth in Kitimat aged 13 to 18 who attend school will continue to enjoy free public transit.

“We recognize the value of improving access to transit for our younger residents,” says Kitimat Mayor Phil Germuth. “This program provides safe and reliable transportation for our kids, while promoting the use of public transit in Kitimat.”

During the months of September and October, there is no requirement for students to show ID when boarding a bus. Starting in November, students aged 15 to 18, will be required to show their student ID that includes a free transit sticker. Those stickers will be handed out by the schools’ administration. Students aged 14 and under, will not be required to show ID.

Students without a student ID or who cannot get one can apply for a monthly pass at the District of Kitimat offices at 270 City Centre.

BC Transit also offers free fares for children aged six to 12, who may travel unaccompanied without providing identification. Children five and younger also ride free but must be accompanied by a person at least 12 years of age or older.
