The Kitimat Fire Department is continuing its investigation into the cause of the March 17 fire at Kitimat Ice Rink.
The fire began inside the facility’s Referee’s Room, close to the KIR entrance, however more analysis is taking place to determine its cause.
There was extensive fire damage to the Referee’s Room, and there is smoke damage throughout the rest of the building.
The District of Kitimat’s Engineering Services department is currently assessing the extent of damage to the entire building.
Background
A Kitimat RCMP officer reported smoke at KIR at 6:23 a.m. on March 17, 2024.
The Kitimat Fire Department was on the scene by 6:29 a.m. and observed flames above the building’s main entrance. The Fire Department was on the scene for a total of just over four hours.
A total of 12 firefighters and one chief officer responded to this call.
