Local response

The District of Kitimat is home to the province's only remaining dual-service fire station. This means our fire hall responders are trained both as firefighters and paramedics and will respond to all emergency calls within the community.

Law enforcement in Kitimat is handled by the RCMP through their local detachment. You can visit the RCMP's detachment page here.

Fire Prevention Services

Our Fire and Ambulance Service focuses heavily on the prevention of fires in Kitimat through the following services:

  • Commercial inspections
  • Fire code enforcement
  • Smoke detector initiatives
  • Home inspections
  • Cooperative training efforts with local industry
  • Fire investigations

Our firefighter / paramedics also can respond with a number of technical skills, including outside of our municipal boundaries including:

  • Motor vehicle extrication
  • High angle rescue
  • Confined space rescue
  • Hazardous material response
 Commercial and Industrial fire inspections

Kitimat Fire and Ambulance provides more than 300 commercial, industrial and high-occupancy properties.

These inspections are vital to ensure the safety of residents and workers. A thorough inspection will include:

  • Inspection of building exterior.
  • Inspection of building interior.
  • Identification of potential fire hazards.
  • A review of records of fire drills, maintenance, and other items.
  • Recommendations and follow-up from inspection.

Checking for campfire bans?

Within the District of Kitimat, campfire bans are communicated in the following ways:

  • As a news post on the Kitimat.ca home page. You can subscribe to news posts to receive them directly to e-mail.
  • Shared on the District of Kitimat's Facebook and Instagram pages.
  • Sent as a notification to our Voyent Alert subscribers.
  • Signs posted at outdoor District grounds such as campgrounds and Minette Bay West Park.
  • As shared through local news media.

Fire bans and prohibitions outside of our municipal boundaries are shared by the BC Wildfire Service here.

 Kitimat's Search and Rescue groups

Kitimat is served by Marine and by Ground Search and Rescue groups.

Search and Rescue teams are called into action through local emergency responders when their services are required. In an emergency situation, call 9-1-1 to begin a response.


Kitimat Ground Search and Rescue responds to land-based emergencies such as missing persons, wilderness rescues, and community support during natural disasters.

In British Columbia, search and rescue services are provided by volunteers and are free of charge.
