Big news!
Starting June 2025, curbside food waste is now processed in a dedicated composting facility located right inside the Kitimat Landfill!
This means we no longer need to send food waste to a facility outside of the community but can generate compost for municipal needs. By participating in the curbside food waste program, you are supporting local public gardens and landscaping!
Kitimat's Food Waste collection
The District of Kitimat collects curbside food waste each and every week. At the program's launch in 2022, all households were provided with a green curbside bin and a kitchen catcher.
What goes into my food waste?
Here is a short guide to what can go into food waste. More can go than you might think!
- Food scraps and leftovers including cooked and raw meat and chicken, pork, fish, and beef bones
- Fruit and vegetables
- Tissues (e.g., Kleenex), paper towels, and napkins.
- Food soiled compostable packaging, including greasy pizza boxes

- Kitchen catchers are intended to be used in your home to simplify food wase collection.
- Once full, transfer the contents to your green bin for placement at the curb.
Reducing Interactions with Wildlife
They have the nose to find it, and the memories to come back for more. Help prevent bears and other wildlife from becoming a problem in your neighbourhood:
- Put food waste out by 8:00 a.m. on your collection day, and not the night before
- Clean your green bin regularly
- Store your bins in a secure location, like a locked garage or shed
