Housing supports

Kitimat Community Development Centre offers a Homeless Prevention Program (HPP) & Housing Resource Centre. 

Tamitik Status of Women as well offers a Homeless Prevention Program.

Kitimat Community Services Society offers programs include a one-time emergency financial assistance due to evictions or hardship, as well as a Reaching Home program which is an access point for low-income individuals experiencing a housing crisis, as well as homeless prevention and other supports.

Airport transportation

The District of Kitimat offers an airport transportation subsidy which provides an 80 per cent reimbursement of transportation costs for eligible persons who need to reach the Northwest Regional Airport.

Persons eligible must meet one of the following criteria:

At least 60 years of ageA person with disabilities, and their caregiverQualified under the District of Kitimat Leisure Access Program

What to know:

  • You must pay the cost upfront and and submit for reimbursement after.
  • You will need receipts of your transportation, as well as proof of your air travel.
  • Travelers with a disability or who qualifies under the Leisure Access Program, must provide Leisure Access Card.
  • Must be a resident of Kitimat.
  • All travelers must qualify for the program, meaning if any passenger does not qualify then reimbursement cannot be provided.

Persons intending to apply, bring your documents to either:

  • Riverlodge Recreation Centre (654 Columbia Avenue)
  • Tamitik Jubilee Sports Complex (400 City Centre)
  • Kitimat Municipal Hall (270 City Centre, third floor of City Centre Mall)

Public Transit

BC Transit operates a comprehensive transit service in the District of Kitimat.

  • BC Transit offers the Get On Board! program offering fare free rides for kids 12 and under.
  • The District of Kitimat further offers a Student Bus Fare program, providing free local transit for riders ages 13 to 18 who are attending school.
    • School-aged riders in Kitimat can request more information through their school.
