Recycling collection quick tips:

Recycling is collected every two weeks, alternating from garbage collection days. Consult your collection calendar for your specific days.

The recycling portion of our curbside collection uses these containers:
  • A rigid, blue plastic container not more than 90 litres in capacity.
    • At its introduction this was provided to each household and is to stay with the home.
  • A yellow, reusable bag identified as containing paper products.
    • At its introduction this was provided to each household and is to stay with the home.

The yellow bag is provided as a courtesy to help separate paper products specifically from other recycling and make more room in your blue bins. However, the recycling collected is placed into the same space on the collection truck. The bags are entirely meant to support your personal separation at home.

When to take to the curb

As with collection for all streams of waste, please bring your recycling containers to your curb no later than 8:00 a.m. on your collection day to avoid potentially missing a pick-up by our collectors.              

Blue Bins

 A blue bin was provided by the District for the program launch and is to stay with the house, even when you move.  

  • Blue bins must not exceed 90L capacity
  • Recyclables must be emptied and rinsed
  • Recyclables must be placed loosely in the blue bin, not in a plastic bag

Here’s what’s accepted:

  • Paper cups
  • Cartons
  • Empty aerosol containers
  • Steel and aluminum cans and lids
  • Aluminum foil and foil - containers
  • Plastic jugs with screw tops (place tops back on rinsed-out containers)
  • Plastic clamshells
  • Plastic containers and lids (place lids back on rinsed-out containers)
  • Plastic trays and tops
  • Plastics cups and lids

Here’s what’s not accepted in your blue bin and must be returned to the depot:

  • Glass
  • Plastic bags and overwrap (like shopping bags and bread bags)
  • Styrofoam/foam packaging
  • Flexible plastic packaging (like zipper lock pouches)
  • Crinkly wrappers and bags (like chip bags and cereal bar wrappers)
  • Plastic seal packaging (like packaging for deli meats and fresh pasta)
  • Fruit netting
  • Non-food plastic packaging (like bubble pack mailers)

If you have a lot of recycling, you can set out more than one bin at the curb. You can purchase additional blue bins from local retailers, or use anything from your house that our collectors will recognize as a recycling bin (like a plastic tote).

Please set out your blue bin by 8:00 a.m. on your collection day.  Do not set it out the night before.­­­

Yellow Bag

A yellow bag was provided by the District for the program launch, and is intended to stay with the house, even when you move.  If you require replacement bins please contact KUTE or visit their website here. 

  • Place the yellow bag at the curb with the blue bin
  • We encourage you to use the yellow bag for clean paper and cardboard, but if you have more than will fit in the bag, please put it loose in the blue bin
  • Rain and snow may get into the bag – that’s okay. Our collectors will still collect wet recyclables.

Here’s what’s accepted:

  • Newspaper and flyers
  • Magazines and catalogues
  • Telephone books
  • Office paper and mail
  • All cardboard
  • 100% paper bags (un-lined)

Reducing Interactions with Wildlife

They have the nose to find it, and the memories to come back for more. Help prevent bears and other wildlife from becoming a problem in your neighbourhood:

  • Put recycling out by 8:00 a.m. on your collection day, and not the night before
  • Ensure recyclables have been cleaned
  • Store your bins in a secure location, like a locked garage or shed
