Kitimat's transportation services are well established and provide the community with reliable options for getting from here to there.

Airport
 Northwest Regional Airport (YXT)

The Northwest Regional Airport (YXT) is located in Terrace, a 55 km drive from Kitimat.

Westjet, Air Canada and Central Mountain Air offer direct flights on a daily basis to and from Vancouver and other BC locations.

Pay parking

Rent a car

In addition to the use of taxis, friends, or family, it may be possible to arrange transportation to or from the airport using internet networking websites such as Poparide or Facebook. However, the District makes no representations or guarantees about the safety or reliability of any carpooling service.

For seniors 60 years or over, disabled or economically-challenged individuals, the District of Kitimat Airport Transportation Subsidy Program provides partial fare reimbursement.

Kitimat Airpark

The Kitimat Airpark is listed as a registered airport in the Canadian Flight Supplement.  It is operated by the Kitimat Flying Club.

Free Student Bus Fares in Kitimat

In September 2020, the District of Kitimat introduced free bus fares for all students attending a Kitimat school or homeschooling in Kitimat, from kindergarten to Grade 12.  The pilot program was a success, and Mayor and Council have now extended it until August 31, 2023.

Student free fares can be used on the Kitimat transit system and also on parts of the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine system, specifically the routes to Cable Car and Kitamaat Village.

Students 14 and under are not required to show student ID.

  • Students in high school (ages 15 – 18) will be required to show student ID in order to participate in the program.
  • Students who do not possess a student ID, or are unable to obtain one, can apply for a free monthly bus pass at the District of Kitimat municipal hall.
  • When students receive their new student ID’s in the fall, stickers will be provided and required on all students ID’s in order to board the bus for free.
  • When the high school year ends in June, students will still be able to use their student ID or monthly bus pass until the end of August.

The pilot program was initially passed by Council in January 2020 with the goal of encouraging more young people to use public transportation and help move Kitimat towards more eco-friendly transportation.

“We’re pleased to be able to support families by increasing the access to transportation and hopefully also supporting community shift towards more environmentally sustainable practices.”  Mayor of Kitimat, Phil Germuth stated in an interview with the Northern Sentinel.

More information on bus schedules and fares can be found at BC Transit.

Questions regarding this program should be directed to the District of Kitimat.

HandyDART operates from 7:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. everyday.
