Free Student Bus Fares in Kitimat |
In September 2020, the District of Kitimat introduced free bus fares for all students attending a Kitimat school or homeschooling in Kitimat, from kindergarten to Grade 12. The pilot program was a success, and Mayor and Council have now extended it until August 31, 2023. Student free fares can be used on the Kitimat transit system and also on parts of the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine system, specifically the routes to Cable Car and Kitamaat Village.
Students 14 and under are not required to show student ID.
The pilot program was initially passed by Council in January 2020 with the goal of encouraging more young people to use public transportation and help move Kitimat towards more eco-friendly transportation. “We’re pleased to be able to support families by increasing the access to transportation and hopefully also supporting community shift towards more environmentally sustainable practices.” Mayor of Kitimat, Phil Germuth stated in an interview with the Northern Sentinel. More information on bus schedules and fares can be found at BC Transit. Questions regarding this program should be directed to the District of Kitimat. |
