Do you face barriers to participating in recreation opportunities?

There are numerous programs for those with economic, physical or mental challenges to help access recreation in the community.

 

 

Grade 5 Access Program

Working together in partnership, the District of Kitimat, Coast Mountains School District 82, St Anthony's School and Haisla Elementary School are proud to offer the Grade 5 Access Program.

Who is eligible?

  • All students enrolled in Grade 5 in a school in Kitimat or Kitamaat Village.

What do you get with the program?

  • This program allows every Kitimat student in Grade 5 to attend public swimming, public skating and open gym sessions at no cost.

KidSportâ„¢

KidSport Kitimatis a chapter of Kidsport Canada that was designed to remove financial obstacles that prevent some children from playing sports. Grants are given to children whose families cannot afford sport registration fees.

Who is eligible?

  • Families of children aged 6 to 18 who face financial barriers to accessing recreation and who live in Kitimat or Kitamaat Village.

What do you get with the program?

  • Grants up to $500 for sport participation/registration fees

Leisure Access for Financial Accommodation

The Leisure Economic Access Policy program was developed to provide economically challenged residents an opportunity to participate in District of Kitimat Leisure Services activities. The program supports individuals and families who face financial barriers to accessing leisure services.

Who is eligible?

Residents of Kitimat and Kitamaat Village (excluding post-secondary students) who meet one of the following:

  • Are below Statistics Canada's low income threshold
  • Are on employment insurance
  • Are on disability insurance
  • All children in foster care

What do you get with the program?

  • Discounts on drop-in admission
  • Discounts on memberships
  • Discounts on programs
  • Discounts on adult ice hockey league
  • Three free drop-in admissions (excluding instructed programs)

Leisure Access for Physically &/or Cognitive Disabilities

It is recognized that physically / mentally challenged citizens may be accompanied by able-bodied persons to ensure that a public program is able to provide a fulfilling and wholesome recreation experience.

Who is eligible?

Residents of Kitimat and Kitamaat Village who meet one of the following:

  • Have a physically disability
  • Have a cognitive disability
  • Are on disability insurance

What do you get with the program?

  • Discounts on drop in admission
  • Discounts on memberships
  • Discounts on programs
  • Three free drop in admissions (excluding instructed programs)
  • Free admission for necessary caregivers

Joe Iannarelli Equipment Legacy Fund

Through the Joe Iannarelli Equipment Legacy Fund, KidSport Kitimat is able to help minimize this barrier by providing financial assistance for equipment.  Access to sport for the young was always the goal for the late Joe Iannarelli through his work in Recreation, and from the sideline.

 

Who is eligible?

  • Families of children aged 6 to 18 who face financial barriers to accessing recreation and who live in Kitimat or Kitamaat Village.

 

What do you get with the program?

  • Grants up to $100 for sport equipment.
