What is a Social Story?
Every person has unique experience when doing new things or visiting new places. The first time visiting an unfamiliar place can make a person of any age or ability feel nervous and unsure.
Our intention with Social Stories are to make our facilities more open and accessible to every resident and visitor to Kitimat.
We are grateful for the support and guidance given by the Kitimat Community Development Centre team in creating this social story

When I go Swimming I will bring my Swim Clothes and a towel
I will check in at the front desk and I might receive a wristband. The wristband might be red, orange, yellow, pink or green.
I will go into a change room with my caregiver to get into my swim suit and to shower. I shower even if I do not feel dirty.
When I'm in the pool area I will walk so I do not slip. I will not run
Lifeguards make sure people are safe. They wear red or blue shirts. I will listen to what they say.
I might need a lifejacket. If I need help I will ask my caregiver or a lifeguard.
I will swim close to my caregiver
There are water sprayers in the pool. They are for fun and they are noisy. They are not always on.
There is a waterslide. If i want to use the waterslide, I will ask my caregiver and I will make sure I am tall enough.
There is a lifeguard at the top of the waterslide. They will make sure I am tall enough before I use the slide.
If I change my mind, I will walk down the stairs.
When my swim time is over, I will go back to my changing room and I will remember to take what I put in a locker.
